Lürssen has announced a €50 million investment programme for its Rendsburg-North and Rendsburg-South sites, with the funding expected to create 130 new jobs over the next two years.
The German shipbuilder confirmed the programme as it officially opened Hall 3 at its Rendsburg-North site in Schacht-Audorf.
The investment will cover the new hall, roofing for a dock, a comprehensive overhaul of one floating dock, a new canteen for employees and wider infrastructure expansion at both Rendsburg sites.
Hall 3 has been designed for the requirements of the new-build yacht market and forms part of a wider programme intended to secure the long-term role of the Rendsburg operations within the Lürssen shipyard group.
“Rendsburg is a strong part of our shipyard group – and it is to remain so for decades to come,” said Peter Lürssen, chairman and chief executive of Lürssen. “Our order books are full for years ahead, and this investment creates the foundation for yachts to be built here well beyond that.”
Employment impact
Lürssen currently employs around 2,000 people, including more than 500 at its Rendsburg shipyards. Several yachts are understood to be in build across the group, including the 146.2-metre Project Defy at Bremen and the 122.5-metre Project Omega and Project Elusive at Rendsburg.
Ingo Sander, district administrator of Rendsburg-Eckernförde, said the employment impact would extend beyond the shipyard. “130 new industrial jobs are a strong signal for our region,” he said. “Statistically, every industrial job secures around two and a half further jobs with suppliers and service providers. What is being invested here has an impact far beyond the shipyard itself.”
The company said the programme reflects the level of technical work carried out at the Rendsburg sites and the importance of skilled industrial employment to future yacht construction.
The investment also reinforces Lürssen’s stated intention to maintain yacht production at Rendsburg beyond its current order book.
