Sailfish Boats founder dies

Sailfish Boats founder, Paul Hoppes. Jr, the eldest of seven siblings, has died.

Born in 1952, Paul’s entrepreneurial career began in furniture stores in locations from Tampa to Clearwater and with his classic fearless confidence, founded his pride and joy, Seminole Marine, in 1986, despite having had no previous marine industry experience.

With his wife Collene by his side, Paul took a small warehouse in Havana, Florida and turned it into a manufacturing plant for Seminole Marine’s flagship brand, Sailfish Boats, setting out to build a fishing boat brand that stood for quality, value and fishability.

In 1995, Seminole Marine’s success attracted the attention of a new industrial park in Cairo, Georgia, and the move was made to Seminole Marine’s permanent home.

Expanding from 50,000sqft to more than 150,000sqft, Seminole Marine quickly emerged as the single largest employer in the county.

Marine industry fixture

Sailfish Boats set the standard for the industry with its high-quality materials, quality control and design, but it was Paul himself whose presence attracted countless dealers to the brand.

As the owner and president, Paul’s business acumen and involvement in the success of his distributors grew the brand.

Paul enjoyed consulting with his friend and mentor, Dick Deputy and working with his children April and Paul III, Seminole Marine became a fixture in the marine industry, later acquiring Southwind Boats to add to its roster.

Paul was actively involved in the day-to-day operations, building the company from the ground up, through to his retirement in 2020.

“He liked to tell people he ‘never had a job in his life’, but in truth, he worked harder and smarter than most, working solely for himself and the businesses he built,” said a family spokesperson.

A company spokesperson added: “Paul’s passion, determination, and hands-on approach has been instrumental in Sailfish’s 40-years carried out through numerous dealers, thousands of Sailfish owners and the hundreds of employees he touched and influenced throughout his time.”

Paul is survived by his wife, Collene, daughters April and Crystal and son, Paul III and granddaughters Mirabella and Lola.
