Mixed picture for outboard sales

Total unit sales of outboard engines in the US dipped slightly in 2023 – by 1.6% – however the industry saw a 7.6% increase in market value to $3.8 billion.

The figures published by the NMMA also show consumers leaning towards more powerful, and consequently more expensive, engines with the 300hp and greater segments seeing a 25% increase to reach $1.3 billion and the 250+hp segment also showing a smaller increase.

The South Atlantic region saw outboard motor sales growing by 10.4% to reach $1.4 billion, accounting for 35.2% of the national market.

The Great Lakes region followed with $768.2 million in sales, a 3% increase from the previous year and a market share of almost 24%.

The Mid-Atlantic experienced the highest growth rate in retail sales, rising 11.9 to $182.9 million.

The total number of unit sales in 2023 was 300,900 however the average retail price of an outboard engine increased by 9.4%, with regional variations in the rate of increase ranging from 2.2% to 21.6%.

The data is based on warranty card registrations and average price information reported by NMMA’s control group of outboard engine manufacturers and scaled up to estimate the US market.
