Sunsail and The Moorings have been awarded winners of the Sustainability Award at the 2024 Southampton International Boat Show.

The award recognises companies that demonstrate a strong commitment to reducing their environmental footprint and driving sustainability within the marine industry and at the show.

A panel of judges—including Kate Fortnam from The Green Blue and Dr Joe Penhaul Smith of Sustainable Sailing assessed the entries, focusing on operational sustainability and how businesses inspired positive change among their customers and supply chains.

Sunsail and The Moorings secured the top spot for the second consecutive year, thanks to their Ocean Promise initiative, which has led to reductions in the environmental impact of their yacht charter operations.

In 2023, Sunsail and The Moorings extended the use of electric outboard motors across Mediterranean bases, cutting fossil fuel consumption by 4,355 gallons annually. Additionally, the installation of water purification systems on 300 yachts eliminated over 24 tonnes of single-use plastic waste.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have won this prestigious award again. Sustainability is no longer just a side project; it’s now central to everything we do, helping us create meaningful change,” said Laura Bowtell, head of sales, operations, and sustainability at Sunsail and The Moorings.

The judging panel had a tough decision, and we applaud the efforts of all participants.

“While we’re still at the start of our journey, we’re committed to setting the right priorities, exploring new technologies, and ensuring our customers are fully on board.”

Boatfolk took second place, praised for its efforts in raising environmental awareness and championing sustainable boating practices.

This year the company launched its EcoMarine division, focused on environmentally friendly refits, repairs, and maintenance.

In third place, The Electric Outboard Company helps boaters transition from fuel-powered engines to clean, renewable energy-driven motors.

The company also powers its operations with renewable energy.

“The judging panel had a tough decision, and we applaud the efforts of all participants,” said Lesley Robinson, British Marine CEO. “Their innovations underscore the growing importance of sustainability in the marine industry.

This year’s entries show an exciting future for environmentally responsible boating.”
