EPTechnologies receives DNV approval

EPTechnologies has received DNV approval for its next-generation solid-state tech Svenner battery pack.

Features of the Svenner Battery include solid-state cell technology, replacing most liquid electrolytes with advanced solid materials.

The technology allows the battery to withstand six times overcharge and 8mm nail puncture with no thermic reaction.

“Achieving DNV type-approval for our solid-state tech battery is a breakthrough for marine electrification,” said Marco Ottiker COO and co-owner of EPTechnologies.

“We’re now offering vessel designers and operators a turnkey energy-storage solution that combines the highest levels of safety, durability and performance, enabling the next generation of electric propulsion systems.”

The battery, which has been designed for at least 10,000 life cycles, has a dual-core lockstep CPU battery management system which ensures redundancy alongside a continuous monitoring HIVIL interlock and internal water-leak detection for module-level protection.

“In other words two synchronised processors constantly monitor system safety for uninterrupted operation, while integrated interlocks and leak sensors add an extra layer of protection within each battery module,” explained the spokesperson.

Heat resistant

Other features of the battery include no propagation with no module gas ducting needed so any fire would be fully contained within the module.

In addition, the battery is heat resistant providing stable operation under elevated temperatures.

The battery also incorporates a hardware override switch allows manual override of some protections in critical emergencies.

The Level 2 model is expected to launch in January.
