Obituary: Ewan Hind, aged 46

Ewan Hind has died suddenly at the age of 46

Ewan Hind, chief operating officer for adventure yacht company Arksen, has died suddenly at the age of 46.

He had just completed the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC) with his wife Sarah and sons Archie and Fergus in the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 49DS Coconut finishing second in class before he died suddenly and unexpectedly.

The family had set off from Southampton in May and sailed more than 7,000 to Grenada in the Caribbean.

Ewan had been involved in the marine industry since childhood and had sailed in excess of 100,000 NM on vessels of all types, including spending time as a RYA Yachtmaster instructor and examiner, a skipper in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race and as a captain on larger yachts.

Celebrating

In a statement, Sarah, Archie and Fergus said the Atlantic crossing had been incredible and the family had had the best few days afterwards in Grenada celebrating with their ARC Plus family before Ewan passed away.

“He was in no pain and received the best care to the end. He died where he was happiest, on his boat, on the water, surrounded by his family and friends after an amazing adventure,” said the statement. “There are no words right now to express how we all feel.”

And the statement continued that the family will continue their adventure in the future living their family dream the way Ewan would want.

“Next time you see a beautiful sunset, sunrise or sit and admire the vast night sky or the rolling waves, think of Our Big Amazing Wonderful Man and keep him alive with us,” concluded Sarah, Archie and Fergus.

Ewan was a qualified charter engineer, naval architect and large yacht captain.

His career included five years as operations director for Trinity Sailing Foundation before moving on to become a race skipper for Clipper Ventures.

His career then took him into the commercial vessel segment where he was captain before he joined David M Cannell & Associates, a naval architecture and marine consultancy as a naval architect and surveyor.

In more recent years, Ewan joined Oyster Yachts in 2014 initially as lead client project manager before transfering to lead project manager.

In 2018, Ewan founded Lewis Marine Consulting and was the director and primary consultant until 2022 specialising in large yachts, new build and refit project management, owner’s representative and as a technical consultant.

Memorial service

In 2019, he was appointed chief operating officer of adventure boat company Arksen.

At the time he stated: “It’s exciting to be part of an ambitious company at an early stage, and I’m looking forward to being part of the team as it grows.

“I was first attracted to the Arksen explorer vessels; perfect platforms for adventures and expeditions, that allow access to incredible places but with a very light footprint.”

A memorial page is being created on Facebook and Sarah, Archie and Fergus have asked for contributions of pictures, memories or stories of Ewan for the boys to have as they grow up.

A memorial service will also be held, details of which have yet to be announced.
