Oceanco has expanded its facilities in Zwijndrecht, Netherlands, with the purchase of an additional 13,400sqm site.

The business complex was originally built in 1960 and was previously used by De Groot Staalconstructies and was also known as the Army Cars Museum.

The site comprises around 13,400sqm of freehold land, developed with 12,659sqm of business space, and includes an outdoor area of around 3,600sqm.

The acquisition strengthens the luxury yacht builder’s position in the region, where it already has a prominent presence.

New-build projects

The superyacht builder acquired the former Heerema Fabrication Group yard in Zwijndrecht in 2019 after Heerema was forced to close the yard due to lack of orders.

The 28-acre site Zwijndrecht site is used for the phase one construction of its new-build projects.

The site is also used as extra capacity for maintenance, refit and lifetime extension work.

Oceanco’s headquarters are based in Alblasserdam, Netherlands, where it has the capacity to work on superyachts of up to 150 metres.

Support and reinforce

Earlier in 2025, Oceanco was acquired from the Barwani family by Gabe Newell, the founder of video game company Valve, following his interest in the shipyard and personal connection to the sea.

At the time it was stated that rather than restructure the organisation, the acquisition was intended to support and reinforce its existing culture, with the goal to provide trust, tools and the conditions for new ideas to emerge.

Gabe Newell’s acquisition of the company was followed by the acquisition of Alewijnse and now new facilities in Zwijndrecht, the next step in Oceanco’s growth strategy.
