Superyacht air pollution to be tackled

Air pollution from superyachts is to be tackled following a collaboration between the Superyacht Eco Association (SEA) Index and air quality observatory AtmoSud.

The two organisations have announced they are to develop a new methodology for measuring and integrating pollutants emission into the SEA Index framework in what is being termed a landmark step toward decarbonising the yachting sector.

The partnership is said to represent a first in the yachting sector, incorporating particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions, two regulated pollutants that contribute to marine and coastal air pollution.

The collaboration will combine AtmoSud’s scientific experience in atmospheric monitoring and emissions modelling with SEA Index’s leadership in superyacht sustainability and third-party CO2 certification.

The initiative aims to establish a data-driven, scalable methodology tailored to the operational realities of superyachts.

PM and NOx emissions from superyachts are an underregulated yet critically important factor in local and regional air quality.

The methodology will be designed to account for engine and generator performance, pollution control systems, and real-world usage profiles, ensuring rigorous and actionable environmental assessments.

“PM and NOx emissions from superyachts are an underregulated yet critically important factor in local and regional air quality,” said Pierre-Charles MARIA, president of AtmoSud.

“By partnering with SEA Index, we are applying the same scientific rigor we bring to public policy and regional monitoring to the superyacht sector — a high-profile industry that can lead by example.”

Bernard d’Alessandri, president of the SEA Index Superyacht Eco Association, added: “The SEA Index was created to drive measurable change in yachting sustainability.

Pollutants emissions

“By integrating air pollutants emissions into our methodologies, we’re elevating our commitment to climate leadership and giving owners, captains, shipyards, and designers a new metric to reduce their environmental footprint.”

The initiative also anticipates forthcoming international maritime regulation and heightened public scrutiny on emissions from high-end vessels.

The joint working group started methodology development in June 2025, with a stakeholder consultation phase planned for Q4 2025.

AtmoSud is a non-profit organisation and brings together four key stakeholder groups: state services and public institutions, local authorities, industries, and environmental and consumer protection associations, along with qualified individuals and/or healthcare professionals.
