New 140m trimaran yacht concept

The 140m trimaran yacht concept Spear, is the result of a new collaboration between T. Fotiadis Design and Lateral Naval Architects.

The superyacht is optimised for high-speed cruising, suitable for an adventurous owner.

The vessel has a length of 140m, 4650 GT, and an overall beam of 23m.

She has been developed to have a cruise speed of 18 knots, with the developers stating the trimaran’s propulsion power needs are 20% lower than the baseline 110m monohull placing Spear’s power demand equivalent to an 80m monohull with twice the usable GT.

In addition, they say Spear offers a medium-speed engine at the core of the energy architecture, often found in large commercial vessels, providing a further 15% fuel saving per kW compared to a typical yacht’s high-speed engine.

The trimaran is sized for a top speed of 21 knots, and with a PTO/PTI capable gearbox integrated into the system which allows the excess capacity to be harnessed to power all the domestic loads of the yacht when cruising.

This is coupled with an electrical DC Grid for load balancing.

With the reduced fuel demands and available tank volumes, the concept will be able to achieve a range exceeding 7500 nautical miles.

Relatively small sponsons contribute to a comfortable platform that has been designed to need little support from active stabilisation.

The sponsons are not available for internal space, but do provide tank volumes, helping to facilitate the inclusion of future fuels, particularly methanol.

Other features included in the design are an increase in external space while keeping the internal luxury area similar to a 110m monohull.

The yacht has been designed to maximise outdoor living space, with sun decks, alfresco dining areas, and lounging areas.
