Vetus has introduced a M2HSET hybrid set for its two-cylinder M-Line diesel engines, providing electric propulsion alongside conventional diesel power for new-build and retrofit installations.
The system is compatible with the Vetus M2.13 and M2.18 engines. It uses a 24V permanent-magnet electric motor producing up to 2.1kW and 17Nm of torque, connected to the propeller shaft through a belt-and-pulley arrangement.
In electric mode, the installation is intended for low-speed cruising and manoeuvring in marinas, canals and areas where local emissions or engine noise are restricted. The diesel engine remains available for higher speeds and longer passages.
When the diesel engine is operating, the electric motor functions as a generator and can supply up to 30A to recharge the battery bank.
This allows charging while underway and reduces reliance on shore power, although battery capacity, electric range and charging time will depend on the installation selected by the boatbuilder or owner.
Compatible engine mounts
Vetus points out that the retrofit configuration can retain compatible existing engine mounts and the propeller shaft, reducing the extent of replacement work required.
A dedicated ELPS2H side-mounted V-CAN control lever manages the propulsion modes and includes a neutral safety switch.
“The M2HSET hybrid system offers boaters a practical pathway to lower-emission boating without compromising on range, power or reliability,” said Sander Gesink, marketing director at Vetus.
Further hybrid packages are planned for engines in higher power ranges.
