MSC Cruises has acquired the Genoa-based sports clothing brand SLAM from Vam Investments, a move that integrates the shipping, yachting, and racing industries.
Enrico Chieffi will remain at the head of the company he joined in 2021 and will hold the position of chairman of the board of directors and also that of managing director.
Chieffi is a former Olympian and world sailing champion in the Star and 470 classes and was tactician of the Moro di Venezia in the America’s Cup in 1992.
His career has also included managing Nautor Swan with Leonardo Ferragamo.
Since it was founded in 1979, SLAM has collaborated with several high-profile teams and regattas, including the America’s Cup Defender, Team New Zealand.
Investing in quality and innovation
MSC says the deal reflects its long-term commitment to invest in quality, innovation and Italian know-how.
And the company says the acquisition continues its focus on identifying partners that are in line with its maritime DNA and strategies.
“MSC’s global presence and international footprint will support the development and visibility of SLAM…giving long-term stability and growth to the iconic Italian brand that was founded in Genoa in 1979, and reinforcing its solid reputation and leadership position in the sailing, yachting and technical-sportswear sectors,” said a MSC spokesperson.
Italian excellence
MSC says it will continue to focus on and invest in SLAM’s traditional activities, with additional plans to develop a new professional division, dedicated to the business-to-business sector.
This will include creating uniforms and company clothing for the MSC group.
“SLAM represents an example of Italian excellence in the world of technical clothing related to the sea,” added the MSC spokesperson.
“We share authentic values and the same passion for maritime culture with this brand, elements that make this integration a natural fit.”
