French-based PowerTech Systems and the Canadian company Calogy Solutions have signed a letter of intent to create a technology and commercial joint venture dedicated to modular batteries.
The two companies intend to combine their technologies to improve the performance, safety and sustainability of battery systems tailored to a variety of sectors, including marine.
With PowerTech Systems having a presence in Europe and Calogy Solutions developing its activities in North America, the companies say the future entity could establish an industrial presence on both continents.
Complementary technologies
The joint venture could also target new international markets, particularly in Asia-Pacific and the Middle East.
“The joint venture with PowerTech Systems is a significant step in Calogy Solutions’ growth,” said Mahmood Shirazy, CEO de Calogy Solutions.
“PowerTech’s extensive experience in battery modules, their broad product range, and the complementary nature of our two companies’ offerings position us favourably on both sides of the Atlantic, with shared products in North America and Europe.
“This strategic alliance will allow each company to strengthen its position in its respective markets by leveraging its innovative technologies for the benefit of the joint venture.”
The project relies on the integration of Uni.T thermal management technology, developed by Calogy Solutions.

This will be integrated into PowerTech Systems’ battery systems, specifically its PowerModule platform, with the aim of improving cell cooling and reducing the risk of thermal runaway.
In parallel, Calogy Solutions’ L.Pack battery system, which already incorporates Uni.T technology, could be added to the future joint venture’s product portfolio.
The companies say by incorporating these technologies, they will be able to offer modular batteries capable of meeting the demands of intensive use in various industrial environments.
Key challenge
And they point out that in the maritime sector, battery development is a key challenge for the hybridisation and electrification of vessels.
Cyril Bergeaud, founder and president of PowerTech Systems, concluded: “The integration of their cutting-edge thermal management technology into the heart of our battery systems marks a decisive step in our pursuit of performance and safety.
“This partnership allows us to combine our industrial expertise with Canadian innovation to offer more sustainable, safer and more efficient energy storage solutions.”
