French based carbon fibre reclamation startup Nova Carbon and shipbuilding group Grand Large Yachting are to partner with the aim of reducing the environmental footprint of yacht construction.
The two companies will work together to integrate Nova Carbon’s recycled carbon fibres (rCF) into shipbuilding with the ambition of combining performance and responsibilty.
Nova Carbon develops and produces its Nova Carbon product, a high-performance rCF based on the realignment of fibres it collects from industrial partners.
Nova Carbon says the reclaimed material provides the high technical performance of virgin fibre but with a reduced environmental footprint, offering a sustainable and competitive alternative for the marine industry.
Quality and recyclability
The Grand Large Yachting team will take a proactive approach by gradually replacing a portion of the virgin carbon fibre it uses with rCF, using the technology developed by Nova Carbon.
As part of this partnership, the two companies have agreed that Grand Large Yachting’s carbon fibre waste will be provided to Nova Carbon, following the conditions and recommendations set by the startup, to ensure its recyclability and quality.
Grand Large Yachting will explore and develop solutions to reintegrate the recycled fibre from its own waste into its manufacturing processes, reintegrating the fibres into new boat parts.
Certified materials
The approach will be based on a pursuit of quality and traceability, through set processes and certified materials.
The initiative could be extended to Grand Large Yachting’s subcontractors, extending its positive impact across the industry supply chain.
The goal is to increase the use of high-performance rCF in the group’s projects.
The companies say this will pave the way for a new generation of more sustainable sailboats, without compromising on performance.
Grand Large Yachting encompasses six brands: Gunboat, Outremer, ORC, Garcia, Allure and RM.
