British Marine has launched the British Marine Training Academy, a new digital learning platform designed to make industry-led training more accessible across the leisure marine sector.
The Academy combines flexible online learning with sector knowledge and is intended to support people entering the industry, developing their careers or strengthening existing skills. Its first course, Introduction to the Marine World, has also been released.
Created for new starters, career changers, apprentices, trainees and early-career employees, the course provides a practical overview of the leisure marine sector, including boat types, terminology, regulation, safe working, professional behaviour, customer expectations and career development.
It takes about two hours to complete and requires no previous marine or boating experience.
Manj Mahey, head of training at British Marine, said the launch at Southampton International Boat Show had generated interest from businesses seeking better induction routes and individuals looking to develop their skills.
“Our aim is to provide trusted, flexible and genuinely useful learning shaped by the industry for the industry,” said Mahey.
“This launch is only the beginning, and we look forward to working with our members, partners and the wider sector to continue developing the Academy’s course offering.”
The platform has been developed with official course partner Clegg Gifford and founding partners Haven Knox-Johnston Commercial, part of Howden; Skandinavian Agency Services S.A.C Marine Surveyors; Aqueduct Marina; and Bartons Solicitors.
Further courses are already being developed, with planned subjects including technical skills, compliance, leadership, professional development, innovation and emerging challenges facing the marine industry.
British Marine is also asking businesses and individuals to share training needs and suggest future course topics.
