Balearic marine market continues to decline

The Balearic Islands marine market has continued to decline with figures for boat registrations dropping by more than 25%.

The Balearic Islands which are historically one of the driving forces of Spain’s nautical sector, recorded 66 recreational boat registrations by the end of February 2025, according to the monthly report by the Spanish Marine Trade Association (ANEN).

This figure represents a 27.5% decrease compared to the same period last year, when 91 boats were registered, adding to the 20.7% year-on-year drop recorded in January.

Nationally, the marine market began 2025 with a 13% decline in recreational boat registrations, with a total of 474 units registered compared to 545 during the same period in 2024.

Charter market

The downturn has also affected the charter market, which represents 26.4% of total registrations and has seen a 27.3% drop nationwide, with 125 registrations recorded by the end of February compared to 172 last year.

The Balearic Islands accounted for 13.9% of all registrations across Spain, followed by Barcelona, with a 12.4% market share, and Alicante, with a 10.1% share.

The figures show the charter segment, which accounts for 26.4% of total registrations, has been one of the hardest hit by the market slowdown.

However, the Association of Nautical Companies in the Balearic Islands remains positive about the market.

“Despite the challenging start to the year, the nautical sector remains optimistic about a recovery in registrations as the year progresses and the high season approaches,” said a spokesperson, adding that the forthcoming months will be cruicial for the marine industry.
