OneSails powers latest wind-powered cargo vessel

OneSails and Flexon Composites have joined as strategic partners of the Neoliner Origin project, the largest new-generation wind-powered cargo vessel with a length of 140 metres.

The Italian companies design and produce high-performance, recyclable sales and have manufactured three headsails, each of 450sqm for the project.

The sails are constructed using 4T FORTE technology which has been developed and produced by Flexon Composites exclusively for OneSails. The sails are fully recyclable, and the result of extensive research and production processes based in Italy.

“Playing an active role in this revolution means bringing made in Italy expertise to the heart of the green transition in maritime transport,” explained Dede De Luca, CEO of OneSails.

The sails made with 4T FORTE technology will be subjected to exceptionally high loads.

“This project embodies the recognition of a virtuous and pioneering innovation journey that began over 18 years ago and has continued in its commitment to developing advanced and sustainable technology, effectively driving the decarbonisation of the nautical and maritime sectors and demonstrating that performance, reliability, safety, and respect for the environment can coexist in a single solution.”

Piercarlo Molta, CEO of Flexon Composites and head of OneSails’ R&D, added: “The decision to select our 4T FORTE technology for the Neoliner Origin project was motivated not only by environmental sustainability criteria but also by the need to ensure the highest standards of reliability even in extreme operating conditions.”

He continued: “The sails made with 4T FORTE technology will be subjected to exceptionally high loads, and their design is the result of months of in-depth analysis, advanced simulations, and rigorous testing.”

International maritime transport

The Neoliner Origin project has been introduced as an initiative to help decarbonise international maritime transport.

The project was created by Neoline, a company founded by Merchant Navy officers, with the aim of offering decarbonised maritime services, based on the efficiency of using wind as the primary means of propulsion.

The ship integrates a combination of advanced technical solutions, with the main propulsion from two rigid wing sails of 1,050sqm each, mounted on tilting 90 metre retractable carbon masts.

There is also a hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system – 3,300 plus 900kW – for maneuvers and situations not covered by sails.

Technology onboard includes an advanced weather routing system developed by D-ICE.

The vessel was launched in January 2025 and entered service earlier in October 2025 and is currently on its first transatlantic crossing along the route from Saint-Nazaire (FRA) – Saint-Pierre et Miquelon (FRA) – Halifax (CA) – Baltimore (round trip).
