Marine fuel stack receives Type Approval

VINSSEN has received Type Approval from Italian classification society RINA, for its 60kW marine fuel cell stack.

The approval is set to accelerate the demonstration and commercialisation of VINSSEN’s 120kW hydrogen fuel cell power generation system.

VINSSEN, developer of hydrogen fuel cells and supporting systems, says there is an absence of clear maritime hydrogen-related legal standards and it has conducted technology verification and certification procedures in order to gain the approval.

And the company says the certification not only strengthens international confidence in hydrogen fuel cell technology but also marks a significant step toward full commercialisation.

The certification process involved performance and environmental tests based on IEC standards.

The vibration test confirmed the system’s durability under specific frequency and acceleration conditions.

Additionally, a dielectric strength test showed that the system could withstand high voltage without insulation failure, meeting all required standards.

“This Type Approval is a key milestone for the commercialisation of MW-class maritime hydrogen fuel cell systems,” said a VINSSEN spokesperson.

“We will continue leading the maritime market through ongoing technological innovation and the pursuit of global certifications.”

VINSSEN now plans to accelerate the development of next-generation hydrogen fuel cell solutions, including a 150kW high-output fuel cell stack and an onboard fuel cell power generation system using reformed gas (75% hydrogen and 25% nitrogen).

VINSSEN develops and manufactures eco-friendly propulsion systems for vessels using electric propulsion and hydrogen fuel cells and holds more than 50 patents relating to electric propulsion systems, hydrogen fuel cells for ships, and electric propulsion leisure boats.
