Small boats lead the Spanish market

Spanish boat registrations continued to decline according to the latest figures from the National Association of Nautical Companies (ANEN).

The Association’s latest Recreational Boat Market Report shows that between January and May 2025, 2,014 recreational boats were registered in Spain, compared to 2,278 units registered in the same period in 2024.

The report is based on records from the Directorate General of the Merchant Marine.

Of the total registrations in the first five months of the year, 67.5% were boats for private use and 32.5% were boats for charter.

Smaller boats up to 8 meters in length continued to lead the market (86.5%), although they registered a year-on-year decline of -11%.

The 8 to 12 meter segment also fell by -4%.

Increase

Vessels between 12 and 16 meters registered an increase of 17% in the five-month period.

In the over 16 meters segment, there was a drop of -28.2% in registrations.

Motorboats, which represent 44.2% of the market, registered a -10.4% year-on-year decline in registrations.

Jet skis (-28.4%) and sailboats (-18.3%) also suffered declines.

Folding inflatable boats remain the only segment of the market with an increase in registrations – 38% year-on-year increase.

Semi-rigid boats also saw a decline – of -2.4% decline in the period.

The rental boat market saw 654 registrations between January and May 2025, compared to 873 in the same period last year, representing a -25% drop.

Boats up to 6 metres in length were the most representated segment in the charter market, with motorboats (13.6%) and jet skis (10.7%) continuing to lead rental registrations.

Province

By province, the Balearic Islands (276), Barcelona (254), and Alicante (188) led the ranking of provinces with the highest number of registrations.

The Balearic Islands recorded a -34.6% drop, while Barcelona and Alicante grew by 0.8% and 22% respectively.

Murcia (161) saw a 41.2% increase, Pontevedra (99) had a 73.7% increase, and Cádiz (84) a 7.7% increase.

In the charter market, the Balearic Islands remain in first place with 167 registrations, although they are down 32% compared to the same period last year.

Alicante is next with 85 registrations of recreational boats for rent, a 21.4% increase.

Barcelona is the third province with the highest number of registrations in the charter market (78), a decrease of 19.6%.
