$1 million MarineMax data breach settlement

MarineMax has agreed to pay around $1 million to resolve claims that it failed to prevent a data breach that compromised sensitive customer information.

According to Top Class Actions which helps law firms across the US find plaintiffs for class action lawsuits, under the terms of the MarineMax class action settlement, members can receive reimbursement for identity theft losses and out-of-pocket expenses related to the 2024 data breach.

Class members can receive up to $5,000 for documented identity theft losses and up to $2,000 for documented out-of-pocket expenses.

The settlement will benefit individuals who received a data breach notification letter from MarineMax or insurance and finance company Newcoast, informing them their information may have been compromised in a 2024 data breach.

According to the MarineMax data breach class action lawsuit, MarineMax failed to implement reasonable cybersecurity measures that could have prevented the 2024 data breach.

Settlement funds

Hackers reportedly gained access to sensitive information such as social security numbers, driver’s license numbers and bank account information.

MarineMax hasn’t admitted any wrong doing but Top Class Actions says the boat dealership has agreed to pay $1,018,825.50 to resolve the claims.

After identity theft loss, out-of-pocket expense and credit monitoring payments are deducted from the settlement fund, class members can receive a pro rata share of the remaining funds, capped at $500 per claimant.

More than 123,000 customers were notified by MarineMax that they had been impacted by the data breach which the Rhysida ransomware group laid claim to.

Stolen data was said to have included MarineMax earnings reports, balance sheets, bank account wire transfers, customer databases and other financial documents.

MarineMax is the world’s largest recreational boat and yacht retailer.
