Yamaha and Cefmof develop hydrogen concept boat

Yamaha Motor Co is to demonstrate a development and proof of concept project for a hydrogen-powered sauna boat in conjunction with Finnish non-profit organisation Central Finland Mobility Foundation (Cefmof).

The collaboration has been researching, developing and testing solutions in which the electricity generated by the hydrogen fuel cells, electric propulsion, and other hydrogen-based energy applications can work together as one integrated system.

The objective has been to gain practical experience in a real-life environment with emerging technologies and evaluate their suitability for a wide range of marine applications.

“For us, the hydrogen sauna boat is first and foremost a technical test platform where we can develop and evaluate new ways of using hydrogen in real operating conditions,” explained Haruka Arai, executive director of Cefmof.

“Practical experience is essential to understanding where hydrogen can provide added value in future marine applications.”

Practical knowledge

He added: “Projects like this are not about developing a single vessel; they are about building expertise and practical knowledge that can be applied much more broadly.”

The project has seen electricity generated using hydrogen fuel cells and hydrogen cartridges powering Yamaha Motor’s HARMO electric boat control system to propel the boat, while also simultaneously running a hydrogen sauna.

It is Yamaha Motor’s first initiative to explore a marine application combining hydrogen and electric power in this way.

Yamaha’s HARMO boat control and propulsion system integrates an electric propulsion unit, steering system, and other components.

The system incorporates a rim-drive propulsion setup to deliver efficient thrust, with strong propulsion at low speeds.

Minimal turnaround time

Approximately 1kg of hydrogen is used to provide the vessel with around two-hours of power for propulsion, the sauna and a hydrogen-powered grill.

Hydrogen cartridges can be replaced when the vessel docks allowing a minimal turnaround time.

Safety has been a fundamental consideration throughout the design of the hydrogen sauna boat.

The hydrogen system has been designed to minimise the risk of leaks, while hydrogen concentrations are continuously monitored using gas detection sensors.

If a leak is detected, the hydrogen supply is automatically shut off.

Safety is also further enhanced through continuous ventilation and multiple complementary technical safety measures designed to prevent hydrogen accumulation and minimise potential risks.

Unveiling

The sauna boat is scheduled to be unveiled at Rally Finland, a round of the FIA World Rally Championship, to be held in Finland from July 30 2026.

Yamaha points out that the initiative aligns with its multi-pathway approach to sustainability to a decarbonised society.

In addition to electrification, Yamaha Motor is continuing to explore the potential of hydrogen and other alternative energy sources.
