Rim Drive Technology receives DNV type approval

Rim Drive Technology has received type approval from classification organisation DNV for its electric POD motor series.

The certification confirms that the electric motors in the POD series comply with DNV rules for classification of ships, offshore units, high-speed and light craft.

The motors are three-phase synchronous motors with permanent-magnet excitation, controlled by a frequency converter.

The certified range covers power ratings from 0.5 to 50kW, with voltages from 24 to 570V AC. The certificate also includes IP68 protection, insulation class F, and temperature class A.

The motors are suitable for variable frequency and variable speed operation.

Efficient and reliable

“These specifications reflect what Rim Drive Technology is built around: compact, efficient and reliable electric propulsion for a wide range of marine applications,” said a spokesperson from Rim Drive Technology.

“In many marine projects, reliability alone is not enough. Documentation, traceability, and compliance with classification rules are becoming increasingly important.

“DNV type approval provides a clear technical foundation for the POD series.”

As part of the type approval periodic assessments will be required, including reviews of product documentation, routine test results, possible design or material changes and traceability between product markings and the type approval certificate.
