Up to 400 new berths are set to be created at the Port of Mergellina, Naples, with a 250m extension to the Mergellina breakwater pier.
The project will add six floating docks perpendicular to the pier providing space for approximately 350 to 400 new berths as part of the new Marina di Mergellina.
Work is set to start later in 2024 headed by AFINA (Associazione Filiera Italiana della Nautica).
Afina Napoli Srl together with a network of partners, with project leaders stating that the berthing limitation in the area is putting off boaters and shipyards would potentially sell more boats if there was more berthing availability.
“There will be no particular upheaval of what today represents the Mergellina area,” explained Renato Marconi, who heads Marinedi – a leading player in the marine industry with a major network of marinas in Italy.
“Work will be done only on the breakwater pier with the optimisation and rationalisation of what already exists to date, with only the expansion of medium and small berths.
“All with the construction of an extension of the overflow arm to also defend the fragility that the current marina demonstrates today.”
The project is set to be completed by Spring 2026 with sustainability high on the agenda.
“If everything goes smoothly,” said Gennaro Amato, president of AFINA, “And I trust in the positive indications received from the institutional referents at the States General of the Nautical organised by us at Nauticsud, by spring 2027 we will finally have the Marina di Mergellina.”
Submissions will be made to public bodies later in 2024 with the project ready to begin by early November.
