President Trump has announced additional 50% tariffs on Canadian products, including recreational boats imported into the US.
The announcement is in response to Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on selected US goods that took effect on 8 September 2026, covering $27.6 billion in imports, after the Trump administration imposed new 50% tariffs on certain Canadian products.
The dispute now includes parts of the recreational marine sector, although American-made recreational boats, personal watercraft and marine engines are not included in Canada’s countermeasures.
The duties are scheduled to take effect on 15 September and are intended to apply regardless of whether the products comply with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.
They will be imposed in addition to duties already applied and cover several categories of recreational boats imported from Canada, including motorboats other than inflatable or outboard motorboats up to 7.5 metres, motorboats over 7.5 metres but not over 24 metres, outboard motorboats up to 7.5 metres, and outboard motorboats of 7.5 metres and over.
Marine-related equipment
Canada’s tariff list affects some marine-related equipment and components exported from the US.
Categories identified as specially designed for use on boats include recreational boat and utility trailers, anchors, grapnels, chains, non-portable stoves and ranges, cooking chambers, panels, door assemblies, burners and other stove parts.
Some iron or steel articles used in the manufacture or repair of engines or engine parts for commercial fishing vessels are also listed.
The measures could also affect wider areas of marine supply because of the breadth of some HTS codes, including aluminium and fabricated aluminium, steel and fabricated metal items, marine electronics, electrical systems, hardware, pumps, seating, furniture, lighting, refrigeration, onboard appliances and manufacturing tooling.
