The Yacht Club de Monaco’s Superyacht Eco Association (SEA) Index has completed what it says is its most ambitious development to date – the expansion of its flagship CO2 certification programme to include fuel cell technologies.
The programme will now evaluate and rate the energy intensity of all types of fuel cell technologies installed on superyachts.
The development will show superyacht owners and other stakeholders considering alternative fuel systems how these technologies affect a yacht’s environmental footprint.
The SEA Index is designed to increase transparency throughout the sector, providing unbiased, independent, data-driven tools to enable yacht owners and stakeholders to assess the environmental impact of their vessel.
Newest vessels
SEA Index has worked in collaboration with technical specialists from maritime classification society Lloyd’s Register to accurately assess superyachts equipped with the latest fuel cell technologies, including both methanol and hydrogen-based systems.
The updated formula and evaluation process is based on data from some of the yachting industry’s newest vessels.
SEA Index has applied the updated methodology to rate Sanlorenzo’s new 50Steel Almax superyacht, which achieved a three-star SEA Index rating for its energy efficiency based on methanol fuel-cell reformer technology.
SEA Index assesses the environmental impact of yachts over 25 metres.
It was launched in 2020 by the Yacht Club de Monaco, under the aegis of its ‘Monaco Capital of Advanced Yachting’ initiative.
