Turntide Technologies has partnered with the FNM Hybrid division of CMD to develop the new FNM42HPE hybrid engine with BHS 120kW.
The new system is the result of an international partnership combining Italian based CMD’s engineering experience with UK-based Turntide’s axial flux electric motor design.
The system integrates the FNM42hp marine engine with FNM’s Blue Hybrid System (BHS) and the Turntide Axial Flux Electric Motor, with the Turntide AF430S chosen for its high performance in limited spaces, low torque ripple, and compatibility with voltages up to 850 VdC.
The system delivers a power-to-weight ratio exceeding 5.1kW/kg and 20.5Nm/kg at 360 VdC.
Other key features of the new FNM42HPE with BHS 120kW include peak power up to 310kW (421hp) in electric mode and triple propulsion mode: thermal, electric, and hybrid.
The collaboration shows one of the many ways that axial flux motors can power anything that moves.
Michael Hart
“We are delighted to partner with FNM on this project,” said Michael Hart, business development manager at Turntide Technologies.
“The collaboration shows one of the many ways that axial flux motors can power anything that moves, and we are proud to see the new Turntide next-generation axial flux motor succeed on the FNM42HPE hybrid engine.”
Giorgio Negri, sales manager FNM Hybrid, added: “The partnership with Turntide Technologies team is a prime example of how shared know-how and vision can translate into a tangible achievement in innovation and sustainability, marking an important step forward in the future of hybrid marine propulsion.”
Integrated marine hybrid system
The BHS is a fully integrated marine hybrid system designed and developed by CMD enabling three propulsion modes – endothermic, electric, and hybrid – all managed by a single control system.
Its main components include the electric motor, control electronics, and battery pack, with automatic battery recharging during operation.
The BHS system can be integrated with internal combustion engines from various manufacturers, including FPT, BUKH, BONI, and VM.
The new system will be shown at Metstrade taking place from November 18 – 20 2025.
