Plans to upgrade Suffolk marina submitted

Plans have been submitted for £2 million of upgrades to a Suffolk marina.

Marina owners Associated British Ports (ABP) want to remove 93 pontoons from the wet dock of the old Neptune Marina, now known as Beacon Marina.

The plans are also for the addition of 15 new pontoons and the construction of two new welfare buildings and the installation of a foul water treatment plant.

Plans for the waterfront were originally proposed in June 2023 and have since undergone revisions.

The new plans are based on comments from owners and businesses along the waterfront and also incorporate a new pontoon for visiting or historic vessels.

A space will also be allocated to Ipswich Maritime Trust for a new museum.

Welcoming

The former plans would have involved the removal of all boats from Neptune Marina and the installation of new pontoons on the island.

These were opposed by a number of berth-holders with thousands of residents signing a petition to save the waterfront.

Paul Ager, divisional port manager for ABP, told the local newspaper the firm wanted Beacon Marina to be welcoming for boat owners and visiting crews.

If the planning permission is successful, work could start beginning of 2025.

ABP owns both the Port of Ipswich and Neptune Marina and since 2012 has invested more than £50 million in commercial port facilities in Ipswich.

In April 2024, ABP provided an update on its plans stating it had already started investing in the marina including a replacement of all 36 safety ladders and a review to transition to self-service electrical provision.

There has also been a wi-fi survey carried out to review out wi-fi performance can be improved.
