Webasto signs JV to expand technology integration

Webasto is entering into a joint venture with the Chinese glass manufacturer Zhejiang Fujia Technology (FJT) to further integrate innovative technologies into its roof systems.

The focus will be on adding new functions into the roof glass, including integrated lighting, intelligent shading solutions, solar technologies, and entertainment features.

The agreement will focus on developing and producing fixed transparent modules (FTMs) and will enable Webasto to expand its expertise – from glass pre-processing to the integration of new technologies into modern roof systems, as well as gaining a strong Chinese market position.

The partners are aiming to develop ‘technologically sophisticated yet cost-effective’ FTM solutions for Chinese OEMs.

Focused approach

“China is a key market for us with unique technological and market-specific requirements.

“With this investment, we are pursuing a focused approach,” explained Webasto CEO Jörg Buchheim.

“Together with our partner, we are creating the foundation for competitive FTM solutions and securing access to the future-oriented high-tech segment in China.”

And he explained that by combining both partners respective expertise in vehicle roofs, they will be able to further develop an ‘experience space’.

Webasto says that Chinese automakers are increasingly relying on innovative interior and comfort concepts, in which large fixed and opening glass roofs play a central role.

FTMs and large, opening panoramic glass roofs combine modern design with technological features and high cost-efficiency and are gaining significant importance, particularly among local manufacturers.

The agreement is subject to antitrust approval in China.
