Finnish propulsion company Steerprop is entering the yachting segment with an order for a yacht being built for a private owner.
The yacht will be the first vessel to be equipped with Steerprop’s smallest contra-rotating propeller (CRP) azimuth propulsor.
The yacht will be fitted with two 700kW Steerprop SP 8 CRP propulsors, scaled down models of its CRP systems that have previously been used in Arctic and offshore applications.
The scaled down systems are designed to provide high thrust relative to power input enabling the installation of smaller propulsor units than would be needed for single-propeller systems in order to generate the same thrust.
Performance requirements
The yacht will be built by an undisclosed yard, with Steerprop working with the yacht builder to develop a propulsion solution that meets the owner’s performance requirements while offering strong lifecycle value.
“Achieving the highest possible thrust within the very tight space constraints of a yacht design was a decisive factor in securing this contract,” said Markku Miinala, director of the cruise and ferry segment at Steerprop.

Steerprop sold its first azimuthing propeller 25 years ago for a river cruise vessel, with the Steerprop SP 8 propulsor incorporates the latest developments in the company’s CRP technology, including a permanent magnet motor and pressure lubrication.
