Spanish boat registrations decline

Spanish recreational vessel registrations in the first four months of 2025 (January-April) declined to 1,352, compared to 1,531 in the same period last year.

The are from the Spanish marine industry association – ANEN’s – monthly report using records provided by the Directorate General of the Merchant Marine.

Of the total number of registrations between January and April, 68.2% were for private use and 31.8% were for nautical charters.

In the 12 to 16 metre segment there were 50 registrations up to April, representing a growth of 28.2% compared to the same period in 2024.

Smaller boat registrations up to 8 metres in length, continue to lead the nautical market (86.2%) with 1,165 new registrations in the first four months of the year, representing a 13.6% drop compared to the same period in 2024.

Jet skis

Registrations of boats over 16 metres (representing 0.8% of the market) fell by 26.7% in the quarter.

Jet skis recorded the largest decline between January and April of this year, falling 28.5%, while on the positive side, inflatable boats saw registrations increase by 45.5%.

Motorboats had the largest share of the market – 44.5% – with a 12.4% drop in registrations compared to the first four months of 2024.

Sailboat registrations fell 12.7% and semi-rigid inflatable boats declined 1.3%.

The charter market (boat rental) saw 430 registrations of recreational boats, compared to 561 in the same period in 2024.

Boats up to 6 metres were the most popular in this market, with motorboats and jet skis continuing to be the most frequently registered for rental use.

Registered boats

Regionally, the Balearic Islands (199), Barcelona (172) and Alicante (117) maintain their leading positions in the market in terms of the number of registered boats.

However, compared to the same quarter in 2024, registrations in the Balearic Islands fell by 31.6% In Barcelona boat registrations grew by 22% and in Alicante there was an increase of 6.4% in registrations.

Other provinces with high registrations and growth in records were Murcia (100), an increase of 20.5% compared to the same period last year, Pontevedra (64) with an increase of 52.4% and Cádiz (62) with a growth of 24%.

The charter market continues to be led by the Balearic Islands, which recorded 118 boat registrations for charter use, a drop of 31.8%.

Barcelona saw the next highest number of boats registered for charter use (57) between January and April of 2025, a growth of 32.6%.
