Rolls-Royce is expanding its yacht portfolio with two systems based on the mtu Series 2000 engine: standardised variable-speed gensets and a new SCR exhaust after-treatment system.
The products form part of the company’s ‘From Bridge to Propeller’ approach, which combines propulsion, energy management and automation into more integrated yacht systems.
“Our aim is to offer shipyards and owners a comprehensive and future-proof range of solutions for yachts,” said Dr Lukas Köhler, senior vice president global marine and mining at Rolls-Royce Power Systems.
“This is not just about individual components, but about the optimal interaction of the systems on board to deliver greater performance, efficiency and lower emissions.”
The variable-speed gensets adjust engine speed to actual power demand, reducing fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions during operation by up to 15%. Rolls-Royce says they also operate around 6dB more quietly, improving onboard comfort.
High-power density
With electrical outputs from 650kWe to 1,850kWe, the gensets cover a broad power range. Their high-power density and compact design are intended to support installation where engine-room space is limited and can enable single-deck engine-room concepts.
They are also suitable for battery-assisted marine applications, including use as range extenders.
The new SCR exhaust gas after-treatment system extends mtu Series 2000 applications in emission-regulated sea areas.
The system, being certified with exhaust specialist Eminox, is designed to meet IMO Tier III requirements and reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by 75% compared with IMO II limits.
Depending on load profile, the system is designed for a service life of up to 16,000 operating hours.
It requires no compressed air for dosing and can be integrated into different vessel designs.
