NMMA has released the latest sales trend report for outboard engines, part of its 2024 U.S. Recreational Boating Statistical Abstract.
Total outboard engine unit sales declined 7.6% year-over-year to 278,000 units in 2024, however the market was supported by stable pricing.
There was also demand for higher horsepower engines and strong performance from top regions and states with a total retail value reaching $3.6 billion and average prices holding firm at $12,777, up 0.2% from 2023.
The 2024 annual report shows that engines at 300hp and above led the market with over 40,000 new units sold, generating $1.2 billion in value — representing nearly 35% of the total market and 14.4% of total volume.
Engines at 200 horsepower and above collectively accounted for nearly one-third of all units sold.
Top regions
On a regional level, the South Atlantic, Great Lakes, and Gulf Coast markets remained the top three regions, together accounting for more than 63% of total unit sales and 66% of total market value.
In terms of states, Florida led the way with the greatest number of units sold, while some states including South Carolina and New Mexico recorded notable gains in smaller segments.
The greatest drop was in the small outboard – less than 4hp – with a 16.4% decline. The smallest decline was in the 10 – 29.9hp range with a 0.6% decline.
Some states like South Carolina and New Mexico recorded notable gains in smaller segments.
In 2024, the average retail price per horsepower for outboard engines rose to $92.8, up 1.5% from the previous year. The average engine size was 137.7hp.
The data is based on warranty card registrations and and average price information reported by NMMA’s control group of outboard engine manufacturers and scaled up to estimate the U.S. market.
