Western Australia’s new $187.5 million Spoilbank Marina in Port Hedland is set to be officially opened in November 2024.

The new marina includes a four-lane recreational boat ramp, boat pens, fish cleaning facilities, fishing jetty and a recreation and event space with public amenities.

The marina also includes an art walk that highlights Aboriginal culture with artworks designed by Kariyarra artists.

Work will also begin soon on an interactive, adventure playground for children and families.

The Spoilbank Marina project is funded by the WA Government, Town of Port Hedland and BHP, and delivered by Pilbara Ports. It will be operated by the Department of Transport.

Cultural and social hub

“I am delighted the Spoilbank Marina is almost complete,” said Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel.

“This is a major achievement for not only the project, but the Hedland community, which has eagerly awaited these new facilities.

“The new facilities will transform Port Hedland’s foreshore into a cultural and social hub.”

Additional marina facilities include a separate entrance channel to the main shipping channel, trailer parking for vehicles, maintenance hardstand, publicly accessible breakwaters with pedestrian path, public recreation and event space and public amenities and a waterfront promenade.

Approval for the marina to be built was granted in 2021.
