French shipyard expands production facilities

Chantier de l’Arsenal shipyard is due to open its new 3,800sqm production facilities near La Rochelle, France.

The new facility is designed to be eco-friendly and energy positive, part of a sustainable approach from Chantier de l’Arsenal, builder of custom-built composite maxi-catamarans.

Features of the new facility include bio-sourced materials to limit the carbon footprint of the construction site.

The facility will also feature bioclimatic technologies and photovoltaic energy autonomy.

It is constructed mainly from wood and natural materials including wood fibre and earth for wall insulation, reducing the use of concrete and steel.

The site’s architecture incorporates bioclimatic principles favouring thermal inertia and natural ventilation.

Geothermal heating and high-efficiency LED lighting will reduce energy consumption, eliminating the need for air conditioning.

Sustainable engineering

The technical choices exceed the requirements of RT 2012 thermal regulations, for a sustainable, high-performance building.

The shipyard has used local materials and partners, with the wood used sourced mainly from French forests, and the bio-sourced paints are derived from algae harvested in Brittany.

In addition, Rochefort-based environmental consultancy 180° has been called on for its experience in sustainable engineering.

The building will be equipped with 900sqm of photovoltaic solar panels, producing more energy than the site needs.

This energy autonomy is an integral part of the overall project to make maxi-catamaran production more environmentally friendly.

The site’s design also takes into account the management of soil and water resources.

By limiting the amount of waterproofing, the site encourages natural water infiltration and help reduce the urban heat effect.
