Dhamma Blue officially launched the first hydrogen-powered recreational boat fully designed and built in Spain at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2025
The yacht, which is 7.9 metres in length, is powered by a hybrid propulsion system, which combines electric propulsion with a hydrogen fuel cell.
Hydrogen is stored in an onboard tank and, when combined with oxygen in the fuel cell, generates electricity to power the engine with the only by-product of this process being water vapor,
The setup allows the boat to navigate around 65 nautical miles at 12 knots, with a top speed of 28 knots.
Sustainable boating industry
“If the hydrogen used is green, then the circle is fully closed,” explained Robin Imaz, naval engineer, co-founder of Dhamma Blue, and the boat’s designer.
Features of the Dhamma Blue yacht include a swim platform, solarium, natural cork deck, a forward cabin, rotating seats and a range of amenities such as a hi-fi system and refrigerator.
The yacht has already received several awards including the “Coup de Coeur Jury Award at the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge and a Certificate of Recognition for Marine Decarbonization and Energy Transition within the Sustainable Boating Industry by the Spanish ANBE, the National Association of Electric Boats.
Hydrogen infrastructure
“Dhamma Blue is the first Spanish company specialised in hydrogen-powered vessels, aiming to develop both series production and custom models, while also participating in projects related to hydrogen infrastructure in the maritime sector,” added a company spokesperson.
“Dhamma Blue is the first Spanish shipyard to develop hydrogen-powered boats, committed to using the most advanced design and manufacturing technology to drive the transition toward sustainable and silent navigation.”
