Chesterfield Canal marina plans withdrawn

Plans for a new marina and holiday park on Nottinghamshire’s Chesterfield Canal have been withdrawn.

The proposals for the marina near Walkeringham were initially submitted five years ago.

The 14.7-acre site was used for several decades for brickmaking, with its current use being as a saw mill and storage yard.

The site also comprises unused agricultural land and redundant storage space, which the planning documents state represent a wasted resource as they are run down and decaying, detracting from what could be an attractive destination.

“This type of development brings with it specific economic and community benefits that will contribute to the wider tourism industry and the local amenities,” stated the developers in the planning documents.

“The proposed development represents a bespoke design approach that responds well to the site and its surroundings, whilst also making an architectural nod to the site’s industrial history as a brickyard.”

The plans also included 150 parking spaces and stated dozens of full-time jobs would have been created.

Business plan

The Canal & River Trust previously backed the plans but Nottinghamshire County Council, as the lead local flood authority, had objected to the proposals due to drainage concerns.

The proposals were first submitted by businessman Peter Morgan.

In the business plan submitted with the application, it was stated that the Chesterfield Canal it is an obvious location to develop a small marina.

The plan stated there would be floating pontoons for an initial 40 inland waterways craft with all associated amenities.

The plans also included facilities for small crafts such as rowing boats and canoes.

There would be a 3m walkway around the perimeter of the marina with a new reception, office building, service block and chandlery.

There would also be a pump out station and Clargesters installed for the disposal of sewage; once waste has been recycled it would have fed into the wildlife pond.

The marina would have been established from an existing pond and connected to the Chesterfield Canal.
