Fortescue to build marine battery packs in Detroit

Fortescue Zero is to begin manufacture of its new marine battery pack at its US Advanced Manufacturing Centre in Detroit.

The facility – a former Ford car factory – is currently being transformed into the new battery manufacturing plant with the HV Marine Battery Pack being the first product to use Fortescue’s Scalable Battery Module (SBM) technology.

The technology has applications across the mobility sector, from passenger cars to marine vessels and leisure vehicles.

The new battery pack will be used to power Evoa’s range of luxury vessels, including wake boats and tenders.

The units will deliver between 30 to 34kWh and have been engineered to support Evoa’s powertrain, which is capable of up to 1,000 horsepower, and fast-charging capability in under 30 minutes.

Up to six sub-packs can be combined to support a range of vessel sizes.

Flexible and adaptable

“The Marine Battery Packs we have designed and will manufacture for EVOA in Detroit is just the beginning of what is possible with the technology we have created,” said Fortescue Energy CEO, Mark Hutchinson.

“Our Scalable Battery Module product is flexible and adaptable for a range of products and markets.”

Production of the battery pack is expected to begin in late 2025.

The announcement follows on from Fortescue acquiring a test, research and engineering facility in Oxfordshire, UK. The facility is set to enable Fortescue to expand its prototype, manufacturing and testing capability, enabling in-house management and control of the majority of product testing.

In May 2024, the official rebranding of Williams Advanced Engineering to Fortescue Zero was announced.
