David Marlow, founder of Florida based Marlow Yachts, has died at the age of 82.
David began his career in Apalachicola, Florida, with a deep love of the sea and a relentless drive to do things better.
Marlow Yachts began with early rough sketches of the first yacht around 1995, progressing to full size 3/8in – 1ft drawings in 1996.
Having settled on the basic design and direction, David began working with naval architect Douglas Zurn and the two jointly designed the company’s yachts, sharing design credits for the Marlow Explorer 57C, 61C and 65C.
Through Marlow Yachts, which was founded in the early 2000s, David brought to life a line of long-range cruising yachts known for their innovation, craftsmanship, and timeless design. The first Marlow Explorer, the 65C, made her debut at the 2001 Miami International Boat Show to rave reviews.
Tomorrow’s products
As David explained: “We vowed to build strictly to top world standards and adhere to the strict requirements of standards organisations like ISO (International Standards Organisation) and Det Norske Veritas. We determined not to use yesterday’s technologies for tomorrow’s products.”
Advanced materials were chosen for the yachts, such as Kevlar which was used for the hull fabrics because of its durability.
In addition, Vinylester resins were used and where suitable, epoxy instead of polyester resins and ATC Core-Cell for the sandwich construction, following independent testing showing strength, impact absorption and other benefits not available in competitive products.
In a statement, David’s family explained that Marlow Yachts became his signature achievement — a company rooted in bold vision, cutting-edge engineering, and a commitment to quality that will never waver.
Unwavering dedication
“Each yacht that bears his name reflects his belief that the ocean deserves nothing less than excellence,” said the statement.
“More than a businessman, David was a husband, father, and grandfather, a mentor, and an inspiration to all who knew him. He brought people together—through his stories, his adventures, and his unwavering dedication to his craft.
“His legacy will live on not only in the boats he built, but in the lives he touched along the way.”
David is survived by his wife, Barbara Marlow, daughter, Kimberly Marlow, and grandson, Aidan Marlow.
Also, his brother, John Paul Marlow, who guided and supported David, his nephew and business partner, Michael Cannova, and nieces Paula Reece, Valerie Thompson, and Tammy Thornton.
