A new consortium will promote safety and the environmental performance of yachts.
The classification societies Lloyd’s Register (LR), RINA, DNV, Bureau Veritas (BV) and ABS have established the Yacht Safety and Environmental Consortium (YSEC) for yachts over 24 metres in length.
The new consortium has been set up to drive forward the safety and environmental performance of the yachts and promote and advise on achieving the best practices in the industry.
Members are already collaborating on environmental indices and guidelines for tonnage calculations and load line assignment.
The collaboration is a shared vision that will enable the industry to address safety and environmental challenges more effectively.

The consortium points out that yachts are not covered by the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) in the same way other vessels are so a unified consortium of class societies is required.
The consortium will use the collective experience of its members to support the yachting industry tackling challenges during yacht design and operation.
It will promote best practices in safety and sustainability, advise on industry standards and foster collaboration.
