Cummins has officially opened a new Powertrain Test Facility at its site in Darlington UK, an investment of more than £13m.
The facility is an expansion of Cummins’ European Technical Operations work and will enable the company to develop and test a wider range of power technologies, including natural gas and diesel.
According to Cummins, the new facility is the only one of its kind in Europe and will be able to accommodate a variety of powertrain tests covering power delivery, emissions, fuel economy and longevity.
The new facility will also evaluate engines using a range of fuel types such as diesel and biofuels as well as testing of battery-electric drivetrains and hydrogen internal combustion engines.
Destination Zero
The 7,942 sqft, two-storey facility has taken four years to complete.
“The new centre enables Cummins to develop and test a wider range of vehicles and machinery powered by hydrogen, renewable natural gas, sustainable diesel, or battery electric,” said Jonathon White, vice president, Cummins Engine Business Engineering.
“It is a key part of our Destination Zero strategy, to go further, faster to reduce the greenhouse gas and air quality impacts of our products – helping our customers in their energy transition, whatever solution they choose.”
The Powertrain Test Facility will support Cummins as it aims to extend its capability as a full drivetrain designer and manufacturer.
The new facility will support development of new powertrains which are more efficient, improving overall sustainability in operation.
Cummins employs around 1,750 people in manufacturing, technical, testing and business support roles at its Darlington campus.
