Sunreef Yachts Eco is continuing its quest to enhance sustainability across its vessels, incorporating structural foam from recycled PET bottles into the production process of its yachts.
As part of its latest initiative, the shipyard’s research and development team is integrating recycled PET bottles into the production process for the composite superstructures of the yachts.
The structural foam consists of 100% recycled PET materials.
The use of the recycled materials marks what the shipyard terms is ‘a significant stride towards more eco-conscious yacht construction’.
The shipyard points out that the recycled thermoplastic core offers numerous benefits, including high resistance to process temperatures, exceptional chemical resistance, strong adhesion, and mechanical properties.
“Crucially, it is fully recyclable, aligning with Sunreef Yachts Eco’s commitment to sustainability,” said a Sunreef spokesperson.
“Significantly, the construction of an 80ft sailing catamaran requires approximately 2.4 tons of this foam core, equivalent to recycling around 600,000 PET bottles.
“Following the natural fibre composite, this represents another milestone in the shipyard’s ongoing efforts to redefine the standards of environmentally responsible yacht construction.”
Natural fibres used by Sunreef Yachts Eco include basalt and linen-based structures while interior features include natural fabrics and alternatives to leather.
