Congested waterways contribute to nearly 700 boating accidents

Florida’s congested waterways are being cited as a reason for 694 reportable boating accidents in 2025.

The figures are revealed in the latest Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission boating accident statistical reports which show that Florida led the US with a total number of 1,027,742 registered vessels in 2025.

It is also estimated that up to a million non-registered vessels are in use on Florida’s waters.

“With more than a million registered vessels, Florida is the ‘Boating Capital of the World’. States the report.

“However, high vessel numbers and a mild climate cause Florida to lead the nation in the number of boating fatalities each year.”

Collision with a fixed object

The report continues: “Florida waterways show signs of congestion as each year brings more residents and visitors together to use abundant water resources and enjoy Florida’s boating lifestyle.”

The report’s authors believe that many of the fatalities may have been prevented if the victims had been wearing life jackets.

The leading type of accident was collison with a fixed object with a total of 243 (35%).

Towed watersport activities were involved in eight accidents, resulting in 12 injuries and paddle/human powered craft such as canoes, kayaks, rowboats and paddleboards, were involved in 17 accidents resulting in six fatalities.

During the year there were 43 fatal accidents resulting in 51 deaths, with alcohol or drug-use reported to have played a role in 14% of these accidents.

23% of the fatal accidents resulted from boaters falling overboard (ten accidents), with collisions with fixed objects accounting for 19% (eight accidents) of boating fatalities.

Drowning is a leading cause of fatalities

The leading cause of death in the fatal boating accidents was drowning with 27 fatalities (53%).

Nearly 75% of the vessels involved in fatal accidents in 2025 were 21 feet in length or less.

Personal watercraft (PWC) accounted for 17% of all registered vessels in Florida in 2025 and were involved in 12 deaths and 161 accidents (23%), with 131 people injured in accidents involving PWC.

45% (72) of the PWC accidents involved a collision with another vessel.

Across the year, there were 291 accidents where passengers or crew were injured (437 injured persons). The rate of injury was 47 injuries per 100,000 registered vessels.

The report shows that around two-thirds of operators involved in fatal accidents had no formal boater education.
