Seven yachts destroyed in Turkish marina fire

A fire at Yalıkavak Marina in Southern Turkey has engulfed and destroyed seven yachts.

It is reported that the blaze initially started following an explosion on board one of the vessels and quickly spread to nearby boats with the flames fanned by strong winds.

It is estimated the fire has caused around $100 million in damage, sinking seven luxury yachts between 16 and 30 metres in length and partially damaging another 26 metre yacht.

According to local media reports, the explorer yacht Iceberg, previously owned by a Russian businessman was one of those affected.

In addition, Dad’s Toy is reportedly linked to a British or American billionaire.

Human error or mechanical failure

Another vessel, Lulu d’Angel, is said to belong to a Middle Eastern family and is known for its rare use and high degree of privacy.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation and officials will investigate whether it was from human error or mechanical failure.

Emergency responders including fire fighters, police and emergency health teams attended together with coast guard and coastal safety teams, fighting the blaze from the land side and from the sea.

Yalıkavak Marina, located close to Bodrum, is one of the region’s top facilities, having been voted as a top superyacht marina.

The marina also holds the Yacht Harbour Association’s 5 Gold Anchor platinum certification.

The marina has 620 berths and provides facilities and technical services for yachts up to 140 metres in length and has more than 100 superyachts visiting each year.
